One-channel hardware

Flexio Solar FM Radio by EOL/ITRI & Scenario Lab (Concept)
“Flexio is this really awesome radio that’s solar powered and portable. I’m willing to overlook the “only one fixed FM channel” stand for the cute little paper packaging it comes in. I’m sure the dynamics of manufacturing this are going to be reasonable, because one can even use it for promotions and gifts…like ask someone to advertise on its package. The innovative factor comes from the flexible speaker & flexible solar cell.”

The science of touch

Fingerprints: Signal Processors for Touch
“That means that fingerprints act like signal processors, conditioning the mechanical vibrations so that the Pacinian corpuscles can best interpret them. It’s this optimisation process that allows us to sense textures with a spatial resolution far smaller than the distance between Pacinian corpuscles in the skin. […] There is a growing awareness that the processing power of the nervous system, including the brain, simply cannot handle the volume of number crunching that has to be done to keep a living body on the road. Instead, it looks increasingly clear that the brain outsources much of this work to the body itself: to the joints, ligaments, muscles, skin etc. Understanding how these materials do all this processing is turning materials science into a branch of computer science. It’s even got a name: morphological computing.”

Dual screens

Entourage Edge
“The Entourage Edge is the first of a new family of netbook/e-reader hybrid products. Like the Microsoft Courier, the Edge is built with dual touchscreens. Unlike the Courier, the Edge has one dedicated E-Reader screen/notepad, and one LCD touchscreen side that acts like a netbook. Early images of the Edge made it out to be a bulky, awkward piece of ridiculous. However, a new video from Netbook News shows a mock-up of what the production Edge will look like. Closed, it is indistinguishable from a 10″ ultraportable laptop. The bulky, rectangular thing we saw in the previous video was just a prototype. ”

STACKD: Hyperlocal Communication To Enable Sharing
STACKD is a hyperlocal social network for individual buildings developed by strategic design firm SUPERMETRIC under the belief that based on proximity alone, these communications have a great deal of importance in our lives. As the website explains, they’re hoping to enable office neighbors to get together over business or beers and share resources – from extra conference room space to new projects.”

Molecular movies: New software animates gene expression data
“this program uses a clustering algorithm to turn genetic regulation processes into mini, data-rich movies. These animations allow researchers to play, pause and dive into molecular-level changes in genes and proteins—and see how they work together. The program, called Grid Analysis of Time Series Expression (GATE), pairs the movies with  databases built from reams of previous research and also allows researchers to input their own data for analysis. The result is “animated movies which illustrate systems level molecular expression dynamics,” wrote the authors of the paper describing the program.”

In-car touch

Audi New MMI Touch Input System Makes Perfect Sense
“While other systems require the driver to focus away from the road—either by selecting letters from endless menus or on a touchscreen keyboard—the new Audi MMI touch allows for blind typing: The driver just writes naturally with a finger on the touchpad. The pad is strategically located next to the steering wheel and in front of the gear shift, so the writing can be done in a comfortable position, without having to focus on any screen.”

Inbox2 Combines Email and Social Networking Into One Stream
“You can use Inbox2 as either a standalone webapp or a Facebook application, allowing you to choose the hub of your message stream. If you already spend tons of time on Facebook, for example, you can add your email, Twitter, and other updates to your Facebook notifications instead, as well as read and send messages from any of your non-Facebook accounts without leaving Facebook’s site. Inbox2 also integrates well with your existing system, allowing you to import your existing labels and stars from other services like Gmail. It also has support for Microsoft Exchange 2007″

Paying with a card

Jack Dorsey’s Square Is (Almost) Open For Business
“The idea – let people quickly and easily accept physical credit card payments from their mobile phone. A small device attaches to the phone via the headset/microphone jack. The device gets the power it needs to send data to the phone from the swipe of the card, and sends the information over the microphone connection. Based on the shots below, the device is compatible with both the iPhone and Android (or at least the recently released Droid).”
