“Three architecture grad students at the University of South Florida created an interactive wall they call flex. The wall reacts with light and motion as people walk by it creating a unique experience. The wall is powered by 3 Arduinos, 5 Maxbotix LV-EZ3 proximity sensors, 12 servos and 2 TLC5940s that control 32 high power led drivers that power 64 3 watt LEDs for RGBW color mixing.”

Quantum Teleportation Achieved Across 10 Miles
“But scientists’ recent success in teleporting information between photons ten miles apart makes it seem like we might just leapfrog those flying jalopies altogether. Let’s get one important point out of the way up front: quantum teleportation is not exactly what you saw in Star Trek. It doesn’t actually involve moving matter from one place to another but rather transferring the state of one object to another object—in this case, photons. It all works through entanglement. Here, the two entangled photons essentially become connected by an invisible thread, and whatever is done to one is immediately reflected in the other.”

Brain City Lab
“In this installation the visitors interact with a section of the Brain City Lab research model. As in the previous exhibitions, the algorithms that generate the ephemeral patterns on the virtual cityscape are based on principles of organisation that are borrowed from neuroscience. The visitors can act as emitters or as attractors of visual streams of particles representing the flow of information and energy, so that their position and movement activate the feedback systems in the flow and create new centers and connections within the virtual city. The urban pattern evolves in some places and decreases in others: as new centers are formed, others become smaller or disappear altogether.”

Roger Linn demonstrates incredibly expressive digital music interface – the LinnStrument
“Linn’s prototype touchpad is divided into squares, with each vertical row featuring a stack of 4th intervals, and each vertical stack separated by a semitone, similar to the layout of frets on a guitar. Once one or more notes are pressed, the benefits of the TouchCo multitouch surface come into play to make the LinnStrument one of the most expressive and easy to use digital instrument interfaces going around. The TouchCo control surface is pressure sensitive, which lets you vary the volume of each note, both as it’s initially played and afterwards for some very nice dynamic control.”

HIIDE portable biometric device scans iris, fingers and face
“L-1 Identity Solutions’ HIIDE is a rugged, portable device that can establish and then verify peoples’ identities using three separate biometrics – iris, fingerprint and facial recognition. It must be pretty impressive, as the US Department of Defense recently ordered ten million dollars worth of the suckers. HIIDE is an acronym for Handheld Interagency Identity Detection Equipment. The device is embedded with Microsoft XP and can operate either in the field or hooked up to a PC. You can also customize it by adding peripherals such as a passport reader, a keyboard or a mouse. Once up and running, it can store up to 22,000 full biometric profiles, each one including two iris templates, ten fingerprints, a facial image and biographical data.”

Virtual auto worker will provide data on real-world physical strain
“The virtual worker has a complete biomechanical musculoskeletal system, programmed to respond to stresses in the same ways a real person’s would. “Our software uses a physics platform,” Johnson said. “We can change things and see the effect; that’s what predictive dynamics brings to the table.” Predictive dynamics combines general rules of human body movement with mathematical models, to provide feedback on fatigue, speed, strength and torque. At Ford, the idea is that Santos will be brought in before new assembly lines are installed. By running him through various jobs in various potential set ups, the planners can design an operation that maximizes not only employee safety, but also efficiency and build quality.”

“The idea for Inkstrumental is simple and fun – users ‘audition’ various Burgerman characters, each of which makes a particular sound (could be percussive, bassy, vocal or a bit synthy) when you tap him. So you decide which eight characters you want in your Inkstrumental band by scrolling along and pressing each character to see what they sound like on the screen below… Then, with your eight characters selected you go to a screen like the one below where a looping beat plays (you get to choose the backing beat too). Simply press a character at just the moment when you’d like its sound to be added to the back beat et voila, you’re making music!”
